The A-Z of eLearning terminology you need to master


If you’re new to the eLearning (electronic learning) industry, you’re sure to encounter some baffling terminology. This article seeks to demystify some of the most common and gives you a quick explanation of the top 10 buzz words you need to know about this exciting and highly-effective form of training.

  1. Blended learning

The name gives this one away – it’s when you combine two forms of learning; both online and in person. For instance, your employee may complete a theory-based task online but then do a follow-up practical exercise face-to-face. A real life example: a CPR course where the theory is learnt via a comprehensive online training program and the practice session occurs in person.

  1. Gamification

Another term that is fairly self-explanatory. This involves incorporating game elements into the learning course itself to increase user engagement. Examples include levels, achievements, badges, points etc.

  1. HTML5 (Hypertext Markup Language version 5)

A fancy acronym for what is essentially a computer language. All you really need to know is it’s used to ensure e-Learning content functions properly on any mobile device or internet browser.

  1. Instructional design

The art of designing and creating e-Learning content. Based on the specific needs of their audience, an instructional designer crafts online learning courses and manuals for trainers using computer graphics, programming and other innovative technologies. At all times, they keep to a very specific goal: to continually enhance the learning experience and learner’s retention rate.

  1. LMS (Learning Management System)

A software system you use to track and assess your learners as well as manage your eLearning course content. Many large organisations host this software on their cloud or website but others utilise external LMS such as ours at the World Learning Hub.

  1. Micro-learning

Think bite-sized content. They’re eLearning courses purposefully designed to be tiny in nature to help learners grasp content quickly and retain it for longer.

  1. mLearning (Mobile Learning)

The term used for learning that can occur anywhere or time on mobile devices such as phones or tablets. A successful mLearning program requires the eLearning course to be designed with HTML5 language/tools and have a mobile-responsive LMS.

  1. Retention rate

This refers to how long the learner remembers what they learnt. Of course, the more they remember, the more likely they will incorporate it into their everyday work practices. This is the hallmark of a great training course.

  1. SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model)

Nope, it’s not a misspelling of the word ‘storm’! It’s a set of technical standards that programmers use to ensure eLearning content works with any other eLearning software. Just like a DVD that plays on all DVD players no matter the brand.

  1. Storyboard

Any good director or producer has a great storyboard depicting there the film will go so all crew members are on the same page. An e-Learning storyboard is much the same – it’s a visual document that captures all training course elements including text, audio, interactions, learning objectives and directions for where the user goes next.
